1942       qualified in law 

1944       joined the Africa National Congress

1948       started chased by police              

1960       argued for the setting up of a military wing within the ANC     

1961       acquitted and proposal accepted by ANC

1962       arrested and sentenced 5 years
1963       stand trial with arrested fellow leaders 

1964       sentenced to life imprisonment

1990       released
1991       elected President of the ANC
